The hair is the loudest element, falling long over the shoulders, and the glasses are picked out cleanly enough to anchor the face.
Paint is where this one separates itself from a generic musician figure. A dark, near-black outfit gives the body a solid mass, while the pale face and the round frames lift forward against it, so the features survive at a distance. The contrast between the two zones is the whole trick, and it is handled without muddy edges.
