Deluxe pieces carry more surface detail than their standard counterparts, and a protocol droid with exposed wiring and plating is a natural beneficiary — the format gives the gold finish somewhere to go. What comes out is a figure that looks like machinery rather than a character wearing a costume. At this size the head, the chest plate and the joints read as separate pieces rather than one gold mass.
If the shelf is built around the two droids, C-3PO holds his half of the pairing, and the Deluxe size gives him weight beside a companion. Number 277 keeps him within easy reach of the rest of the Deluxe sequence, and pairing him with the other droid is the arrangement most displays end up using.
